WHAT'S NEW IN NEW YORK THEATRE.

Everybody Dies/ Planet Connections Theatre Festivity

by Bryan Stryker

…Meanwhile in New York City, Jane (Laura Perloe) and her band of renegades are trying to find a way to survive the upcoming transitioning and lead the resistance…

Laura Perloe's Jane is a modern day Patty Hearst type, complete with beret. While still theatrical, her portrayal is far more believable. Her intent and desires are real - she does want to reshape the world when the transitioning is done. Perloe is one of the best parts of Everybody Dies. Each moment she is on the stage is a pleasure.

Performances to Remember

http://www.backstage.com/news/performances-to-remember/

Laura was listed alonside the following actors for their performances at these theatres:

Kate Arrington, Lauren Katz, and Amy Warren (Steppenwolf), Lauren Ambrose (The Public), Kerry Butler (Broadway), Deanna Dunagan (Broadway), Mark Jacoby (New York City Opera), Alison Pill (Manhattan Theatre Club), and Jeremy Shamo (Playwright's Horizons)... in their list of the year's top 22 performances.

"As the year draws to a close, Back Stage East critics look back at the shows they reviewed in these pages to choose the most memorable acting performances. And this is not as easy as you might think. While critics David Sheward and Leonard Jacobs mostly cover the Broadway beat, 20 other critics do their best to review the amazing number of non-Broadway offerings. Our 22 aisle-sitters reviewed a total of 720 shows. And to quote an email from critic Nancy Ellen Shore, "This assignment was difficult because there were so many memorable performances, even by actors in 'small' roles. For the most part, the level of professionalism and artistry of actors working Off-Off- and Off-Broadway is very high." So, New York actors, here's to you...

Laura Perloe

In the New York International Fringe Festival entry Hail Satan, Laura Perloe was evil — literally. As the Dark Lord's offspring in Mac Rogers' crisp comic drama, Perloe used microscopic changes in her voice, body language, and gestures to seamlessly transition from lovable baby to domineering 18-year-old — all within the latter half of a two-act play. Remarkable".

The cast is fine across the board, with props especially due to two players who bring it home with gobs of empathy and brio: Matthew Kinney, who's perfectly befuddled in the tricky role of Tom; and the preternaturally perky Laura Perloe, whose zesty turn as Angie steals the show out from under her fellow players. Her rise from mewling infant to enfant terrible makes the wait through Rogers's sluggish first act more than worthwhile.

The cast is perfect, especially Perloe, who ages from a baby to 18 years old in one act and makes it completely believable.

CurtainUp

Also giving a captivating performance is Laura Perloe as Seaman [sic] Swallows, a woman masquerading as a sailor and absurdly getting away with an implausible gender-bending impersonation.

Fine performers include… Laura Perloe as Seaman Swallows, a woman so determined to sail the world that she pretends to be a man (causing Seaman Stayne much sexual identity confusion when he falls in love with her); and Broadway veteran & Tony nominee Melissa Hart, who isn't given much to do as the Statue of Liberty, but belts out a number towards the end that's a showstopper.

For Perloe, this is a great acting opportunity, as she gets to play Angie from two months to eighteen years old, showing remarkable character changes from scene to scene.

I'm also really pleased to see that Sean Williams and Laura Perloe have reprised their roles as Charlie, the boss and head of the cult and Angie respectively. They play their parts with pitch-perfect precision, at this point making me find it difficult to picture those roles played by anyone else.

OFF-OFF BLOGWAY

The play gets even more complicated and outrageous after the arrival of a baby during one of the office's rituals. While the cast isn't top-notch (except for the wonderful Laura Perloe), director Jordanna Williams keeps things moving nicely but not too rushed.

It is filled with some marvelous performances… Equally amusing is Laura Perloe's turn as Jacob's goy girlfriend, who plays the pageant's Tiny Tim-like Simon.

…the latter [in reference to NYtheatre.com] did praise the humor and the astonishing performance of Laura Perloe, which you really have to see.
